This Dark Horseman Rode Straight to my Heart

Pestilence by Laura Thalassa
Releases March 20th

Once again Laura Thalassa has managed to create something so wonderful that I binged it again in just a few hours. I went in with high expectations, I couldn't help it after reading the first two books in the Bargainer series, and let me tell ya homegirl DID NOT DISAPPOINT! This book.... I am in such a book hangover that I am struggling for words. While post-apocalyptic literature is not a new subject matter by any means, Laura managed to take a popular genre and put her own fresh twist on it.

The one thing I love about Laura's writing is how sassy her female characters (at least in the books I have read of hers so far) are all strong, independent, and sassy. Despite what life throws at them, they pick themselves right back up and rise above it. In a world where there are some female characters that need a man to save them, it is refreshing to see a common theme in Laura's writing.

In the beginning of the novel, the four horsemen arrive with the failure of most technology. Planes fell out of the sky, electricity started to fail, and cars stalled where they were. As suddenly as they came, they disappeared. Until year 5 of the horsemen, AKA the time of the first horseman Pestilence.

Pestilence is exactly what you would expect from a apocalyptic horseman. Incapable of mercy, no emotion, and all bad ass. He rides on his steed from town to town and spreads plague as he goes. Enter Sara, our female character. A former firefighter, Sara draws the short stick (or rather burnt match) and is the one in charge of the assassination attempt on Pestilence as everyone flees her small Canadian town.

I'm not going to spoil the rest of the book for you, some of the best and most heartbreaking parts of this book need to be discovered for yourself, but just know I laughed and boy did I CRY. Some of these scenes are so heartbreaking when it comes to the plague, but if you are able to break my heart over a fictional character you have DONE YOUR JOB!

Five stars, which is rare for me since I am a tough grader/critic. GIVE THIS BOOK A READ! Out March 20th. And look out for her next book, the one I have seriously been jonesing for, Dark Harmony.
