I wasn't originally planning on reviewing this book for a couple of reasons.
1. I had just read and reviewed a book last night, as well as another book recently by Rachel (R.S. Grey)
2. The synopsis wasn't something I was 100% hooked on, but since I love Rachel's writing and characters I still wanted to read it.
3. I had been waiting to see if I was selected to read and review the ARC of The Beau & The Belle and was wanting to try out some new authors beforehand.
I swear, Rachel and her team have some weird sixth sense when it comes to me and her books. As I was typing up my review for The Foxe & The Hound, I received the cover reveal email for The Beau & The Belle. The morning I planned to start reading The Fortunate Ones, I woke up to an email from Rachel letting me know I was selected to read the ARC and she had sent it over to my Kindle. I mean, once is just a coincidence... Twice makes me wonder if Rachel has bugged my house or tapped into my thoughts!
That being said, I am SO glad I read The Fortunate Ones. I was a little hesitant at first to read another book about the billionaire and the cabana girl at the local country club, it just wasn't something that immediately piqued my interest. I gave it a shot knowing that it would most likely turn into something more, and it so did! Brooke Davenport isn't just a cabana girl, she grew up as one of The Fortunate One's but chooses instead to live in a co-op and live paycheck to paycheck instead of living at home or sponging off Daddy. While being a cabana girl isn't her dream job, it pays the bills while she looks for a tutor or au pair position to utilize her double major in French and Spanish.
I loved Brooke. She was driven and wasn't afraid to take risks. Before the novel began, she uprooted her life and moved to France to take a new position and start a new life. She didn't know anyone there besides the mother and daughter she worked for, and I really admire that she could just pick up her life and not worry whether the risk is just too risky. She does the same thing later in the book when she takes a new position in Spain. The main female character is in direct contrast of the 27-year-old hot mess of the last novel I read of Rachel's (which I swear that character could have been fashioned after me... Maybe Rachel IS stalking me?).
James, the billionaire and male lead, wasn't as annoying or cocky as I thought he would be. Sure, there is a certain level of arrogance that comes with having money and getting your way, but it wasn't overly done. In fact, James was actually pretty down to earth and even had a bleeding heart for third world countries. The one thing that was never brought up in the book, was James past other than his schooling. No mention of parents or siblings. Dude is still like 90% mystery, and that kind of makes me love him more... What's with that?!
As I didn't plan on reviewing this book, I didn't save any passages, take any notes, or throw together a bookstagram photo. Overall, I think this book definitely exceeded my expectations and I CANNOT WAIT TO READ AND REVIEW THE BEAU & THE BELLE! I cannot post my review until February 1st, so check back here for a review on both that and Emma Hart's The Upside to Being Single which comes out just two days before. I was not selected for that ARC but pre-ordered it the day it was put on Amazon so you best believe I will be reading it the moment it hits my Kindle.
Okay, off for now. Time to go back to reality (aka my real job) tomorrow morning. I would love nothing more than to start the ARC I just downloaded, but since it's 11pm here and tomorrow is Monday, I should probably show SOME restraint and go to sleep. And by sleep I mean turn on Netflix and zone out for a bit.
Have an amazing week darlings!
