I put some serious thought into what I wanted my first book review to be on Darling Words. Since Emma Hart's newest novel (cover reveal below) isn't due out for a few more weeks and I am DYING to read it, I wanted to do a book that was kind of the same genre and style as her writing, romantic comedy. One of the most significant differences being one is a HUGE Harry Potter nerd (Emma) and the other made a Dobby reference and spelled it Dobbie. Which is a mistake no real Harry Potter nerd would make...
Okay before I get lost on an HP tangent... I really did love this book! I chose The Foxe and the Hound by R.S. Grey because the synopsis absolutely sucked me in and I felt myself hitting one-click on Amazon before I could stop myself. I have read a few of her novels now, and just love how she combines spunky characters, humor, and steamy love scenes together to make some amazing novels. Going into this book, my favorite so far had been Anything You Can Do. Lo and behold, this book contained the male and female lead characters from the book! I had completely forgotten when reading the synopsis that Madeline was IN Anything You Can Do.
I say going into this book, because after the first chapter it was clear that the female lead character, Madeline Thatcher, was pretty much ME. I half wonder if the author stalked me for months prior as research for her character...
Similarities:
1. Hot mess of a life- rent is always late, dead end job going nowhere, klutz
2. Love of animals- while she is told she adopted a mixed breed puppy of medium size, she actually adopted a Bernese Mountain Dog, which is my FAVORITE breed. And I also worked in the pet industry/veterinary field for 5 years and have a huge love of animals as well.
3. She drives a clunker. If you have met me, you know my luck with cars.... Which is I HAVE none.
4. Dead end job going no where. Ugh....
The two significant differences?
1. She's a very messy person whereas I am way too OCD to have messes or anything unclean.
2. FREAKING ADAM FOXE.
I am a 27-year-old hot mess. Where the heck is my hot veterinarian!? I HAVE EVEN BEEN A VET ASSISTANT!
R.S. definitely didn't disappoint with her leads in this novel. Adam Foxe is the sexy veterinarian to Madeline's hot messedness (yes that is a word, no I do not mean messiness). He's stubborn, lovable, and has (mostly) the right amount of jealousy to be sexy and not want to punch him. Madeline is put together by stubbornness as well (which is such a GREAT combination sometimes *sarcasm*), quirks, and her ability to get up and keep fighting despite everything life seems to throw at her.
If you love sexy alpha males, an adorably misbehaved mountain of a puppy, or can identify with a character that has a hot mess of a life then you should DEFINITELY give this book a shot!
A couple of my favorite and most relatable excerpts from The Foxe and the Hound by R.S. Grey:
"I didn't plan to be this dysfunctional at 27, but dysfunctionality has a way of creeping up on you. One second, you're 22, wrapping up your undergraduate degree from a top business school, and then suddenly, you're sitting alone in your car at 27, wondering how five years slipped through your fingers without so much as a blink." (Grey, pg. 30)
"... Even though I haven't gone on a date in two months, and the closest I've been to a climax recently is when my beat up car starts vibrating at about 35 miles per hour." (Grey, pg. 72)
